THE FRIENDS of SEWARD PARK

 

 

 

T

he Friends of Seward Park strives to build community through stewardship, recreation, and environmental education.  We are committed to preserving the unique natural habitats and cultural legacy of this historic Olmsted park.

 

We are volunteers working in cooperation with park visitors and the Seattle Parks Department to preserve and enhance:

 

·         Solitary pursuits and active recreation.

·         Environmental education and park stewardship.

·         Forest and lake habitats for wildlife diversity and human enjoyment.

 

Accomplishments and Continued Activities

 

Community Outreach

·         Provide a forum for discussion of park-related concerns at monthly meetings.

·         Co-sponsored Holiday Hayrides to help foster a sense of community.

·         Lead walking tours every 1st Saturday of the month, including April cherry blossom tour.

·         Fiscal sponsor for the Seward Park Playground Improvement Foundation.

Education

·         Publish the natural and human history of the park on our website:  www.sewardpark.org .

·         Donated $1,000 to train teens to conduct nature programs in the park.

·         Lead field trips for Orca K-8 school.

·         Worked with Rainier Valley Historical Society to fund historical sign for the hatchery.

·         Provide assistance to the new Seward Park Environmental and Audubon Center.

Stewardship

·         Planted over 150 trees and shrubs at Seward Park and along Lake Washington Boulevard.

·         Received a $10,000 grant to remove invasive English Ivy from the Old-Growth forest.

·         Worked with Seattle Parks and Recreation to develop a Vegetation Management Plan.

·         Cooperate with the Green Seattle Partnership for continued removal of invasive plants.

·         Received a grant from the Washington Native Plant Society for restoration of Seward Park’s Garry oak grove, a remnant of the historical Clark’s Prairie.

·         Created natural-looking basalt mile markers installed in keeping Olmsted design.

·         Assist in trail maintenance and development.

·         Advocate for responsible park stewardship in our work with the Seattle Parks Department and with the Seward Park Environmental and Audubon Center.

Research

  • Inventory and monitor plants and animals in the park.
  • Research the geologic, environmental, and human history of the park.

What Makes Our Park Special

 

·         Miles of wooded trails.

·         Shoreline access, bathing beach and salmon habitat.

·         The Magnificent Forest, the largest remaining old-growth forest in Seattle.

·         Largest grove of Garry oaks in Seattle, remnant of Clark’s Prairie.

·         Home to unique animal, bird, and plant species, including two eagle nests.

·         Japanese garden and native plant garden.

·         Set in one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in America.

·         Home to the Clay Studio and the Seward Park Environmental and Audubon Center.

 

How You Can Get Involved

 

Please check any areas where you can share your skills, your time, or your financial support:

 

q  Attend monthly meetings and discuss park issues.

q  Hands-on work parties in trail restoration and/or habitat preservation.

q  Research in botany, forest ecology, limnology, or natural history.

q  Publication, web design, information retrieval and dissemination.

q  Fundraising, grant writing, and park advocacy.

q  Bilingual translation in Vietnamese, Spanish, Cambodian, Laotian, Japanese, Chinese, or Somali.

We’ll keep you informed of our progress and seek your input on decisions affecting the park and its future.  To join, send a check for $12.00 made payable to Friends of Seward Park and mail to the address below.  If you cannot afford the $12.00 fee, you may donate two volunteer work hours on an approved volunteer activity.  Contact us for details.
